National Occupational Standards describe the performance required of staff when carrying out particular aspects of their work, together with the knowledge and skills required to perform effectively. The Local Land Charges and Property Information NOS describe the performance required of anyone working in Local Land Charges or involved in providing responses to property information enquiries in local authorities.

There are National Occupational Standards for almost all roles in local government. The National Occupational Standards for democratic services, electoral services, fire and rescue services, teaching assistants, social care and housing, for example, are relevant to particular roles. National Occupational Standards in management and leadership, administration and customer service are relevant to a wide range of local authority staff. Most current National Occupational Standards can be found on www.ukstandards.co.uk.

National Occupational Standards can be used throughout the human resource management and development cycle, for example in workforce planning, designing job roles, job descriptions and person specifications, recruitment and selection, induction, training needs analysis, training design, delivery and evaluation, continuing professional development, performance management, recognition, career development, succession planning and promotion. For more information see Using NOS section of this site.

National Occupational Standards also form the basis of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) and other vocational, academic and professional qualifications. For more information, see NVQs section of this site.
